There were plenty of controversial moments, cards and goals, making it a match to remember for all neutrals.

The game started off with a fast pace, with Romelu Lukaku getting the better of Diego Carlos as he went on yet another powerful run towards goal. The Brazilian centre-half brought Lukaku down and Inter had a penalty in the 4′ minute, but Carlos probably should have been given a red card for what was a cynical challenge on the striker. However, he wasn’t dismissed, and Lukaku calmly slotted the penalty past Bounou to score in his 11th Europa League game in a row. It also turned out to be his 34th goal of the season for Inter, a total that is only matched by Ronaldo in his time at the club.

Sevilla didn’t let the early setback faze them. Just seven minutes later, Jesus Navas’s cross was met by Luuk de Jong, as the Dutch striker stooped low to power his header past Handanovic. In fact, it was de Jong who put Sevilla in front just after the half-hour mark. Instead of a stooping header, this time he rose highest to meet a free-kick, and his towering header curled into the top corner at the far post. The much-maligned striker had sent Sevilla through past United in the semi-final, and was rewarded with a starting berth; he did not disappoint.

Sevilla’s defence couldn’t hold on to the lead for long, though. Just two minutes after grabbing the lead, they were pegged back from another free-kick. This time, it was veteran centre-back Godin who found himself nodding home from close-range, and the scores stayed level past half-time.

The winner came too late on for Inter to muster up a response. After a poor clearance into the air, it was the centre-back Diego Carlos who leaped into an overhead kick. His effort seemed to be going wide, but Lukaku, of all people, had instinctively stuck out a leg, and the ball deflected off of him into the back of the net. A painful one for Inter to take, as Carlos probably shouldn’t have been on the pitch anyway.

Despite playing some astonishing football in the lead up to the final, it just wasn’t Inter’s night in Cologne. Sevilla seem to be unstoppable when it comes to this competition, having now won 36 of their last 37 Europa League ties. Lopetegui will be thrilled to have led the club to yet another trophy in the clubs illustrious Europa League career.

MOTM: Luuk de Jong

By Jed Vine

Embed from Getty Images Sevilla claimed their sixth Europa League title after a blockbuster meeting with Inter Milan.
